Pictures in our apartment are not just one more decoration of walls, or a method to close a hole. The picture is like a wall tsarina, a joy for eyes and an indicator of your taste and style. If doesn’t mean if you have works of Rembrandt or Picasso, you should know how to place them correctly. Let’s find out basic rules about where and how it is necessary to hang up pictures.
Great artists of different epochs not only paid huge significance to a correct choice of a frame for the pictures – they did sketches of elements of a baguette or even produced it. Leonardo da Vinci, for example, considered that “the frame creates a special aura round a picture, it should not be just a frame – it should be with it as a unit”. Probably, it is necessary to listen to great Leonardo’s opinion and to approach to a choice of a frame with all gravity. It is unimportant what you wish to frame, it is important, how to make it. Frankly speaking, it is a difficult problem. On the one hand, the frame should underline originality and individuality of a work of art, and with other – to be the high-grade element of a decor consolidating with the image and that interior in which it is placed.
Frame development is connected with occurrence of an easel painting – with the Middle Ages, with late Gothic. During an epoch of late Gothic and the early Renaissance, the frame acted as the architectural construction connected with architecture of church and proceeding in architecture of a picture. Ordinary, not the architectural frame, consisting from laths, boards and profiles, appears from the middle of the fifteenth century. During all epoch (especially in baroque) prevailed the gilt frame – magnificent (decorated with a vegetative ornament, images of fruit, the bowls, at first cut out of a tree, then cast of plaster), neutral, softly, but resolutely delimiting a picture from an environment. In bourgeois Holland of the seventeenth century dominated dark (black, brown) frame with simple profiles, natural to dark and warm pictures on tone. Together with impressionists there is a white frame, especially suitable for bright, florid painting.
The most widespread format for a picture is quadrangular, and the pure square meets less often, than a quadrangle, more or less extended upwards or in breadth. Some epoch appreciate a round format (tondo) or an oval. The format history is not written yet; there are only the incidental researches concerning separate epoch and artists. From them undoubtedly follows that the choice of a format hasn’t casual character, that the format usually occurs from deep, fundamental connection as with the contents of a work of art, with its emotional tone, and with a picture composition that in it the individual temperament of the artist, and it is equally brightly reflected also taste of the whole epoch.
At all times fine arts products had an appreciated value. Portraits and pictures decorated manors of noblemen and merchants, palaces of monarchs and the house of intelligentsia. Today interest to painting also is rather great, and the portrait on a photo became a popular gift on birthdays, anniversaries and different other holidays.
The portrait always was one of the most popular genres of the fine arts. In the last centuries, one of the basic functions of a portrait was a preservation of appearance of the person for associates and descendants. However, with occurrence in mass use of a photo, the given function of a portrait has passed to it. Fans of the fine things say that Dutch painting is one of the most amazing directions of art. But it is not possible to see works of Rubens, Rembrandt, Snayders and others widely and a little known painters very often. Sale of their pictures at auctions is whole event for collectors. It is necessary to notice that purchase of the Dutch painting is favorable investment of money.
To see masterpieces of the Dutch painting, many people hasten in museums and on exhibitions. But no museum on a planet has even 50 % of works of the Dutch and Flemish painters.
Romanticism (fr. romantisme from an armour; romanum Roman from Roma — Rome) — one of two, along with Classicism, basic tendencies of art thinking. However, it has historically developed that this word began to name a wide range of the most different phenomena. In the end of eighteenth century as a romantic named all unusual, fantastic, everything what occurs “as in novels”. The romantic, raised poetry was considered then is unique a worthy art form. But there was also other interpretation of the term: romantic is an art of the Romance people, mainly medieval, which was opposed to classical, antique. The French word “roman” originally meant the literary works written not in classical Latin, and on vulgar, national adverbs. Therefore as romantic art at first understood Middle Ages art, including the Renaissance, which was not allocated during a special epoch. The modern name “novel” — a drama for reading, more often a love story, the composition and which style deviate classical rules.
Painting is a kind of fine arts, when works of art are created by means of the paints, which are put on any firm surface. As well as other art forms, painting carries out ideological and informative problems, and also serves as sphere of creation of subject aesthetic values, being one of advanced forms of human work.
Painting reflects and estimates the spiritual maintenance of an epoch, its social development. Powerfully influencing feelings and thoughts of spectators, forcing the last to endure the validity represented by the artist, it serves as effective means of public education. Many products of painting possess documentary-informational value.
Recently I have opened a color pencil for myself. I suggest to you also to get accustomed to this material more attentively.
Working with small children, I offered them cooler pencils for the first acquaintance with color. Then, very soon, passed to development of more serious materials – a watercolor and gouache. Also I was always confident that color pencils – is frivolous, insignificant and superficial technics…
Now, after my experiments with a color pencil, I should recognize that there are no insignificant materials and the technician in the fine arts in general!
Let’s speak about technics elements, at first.
The pencil leaves on a paper a thin line and it is impossible to cover the big area at once. Sometimes these not complete parts of drawing have huge psychological influence on the artist; therefore I recommend to divide work into fragments and to make them consistently. Such approach justifies itself, as I perceive each part of drawing simply as a combination of light, average and dark values. Here is necessary certain practice. Eyes should learn to see object not only as a subject, but also as set of different color stains. To your surprise, such method will remove a lot of problems, especially in the beginning work, and difficult work at any difficult drawing will give huge pleasure.
